Chapter 9

Just like we thought, the bar was in full swing tonight. Outside of our regulars, it seemed news of a stabbing had brought in the college crowd. Being busy kept her mind off Justin, and the tips she was making tonight would be more than enough to get her into a new place. The bar was full of buzz, and as each round of drinks went out the stories about what happened the night before grew wilder and wilder. At one point a customer even came up to her and asked if Chaz had really cut out Joey’s heart. Tessa laughed, the things people would say just to try and talk to a girl never surprised her.

When Chaz rolled in around nine, the entire bar went silent for a moment. She couldn’t tell if it was from his commanding presence or if everyone knew he was the one that killed Joey. Chaz scanned the bar with his bright blue eyes. He seemed to be looking at everyone daring them to challenge his right to be there. When no one spoke up, and the conversation around the bar started again, he moved into the room and took a seat at the far end of the bar.

“Nice to see you again stranger,” Tessa said while starting to make him a Jack and Coke.

“It’s good to be back, although it’s a little bit more crowded then I remembered.”

“I guess we were the big news in town; everyone wanted to have a drink where there was a murder. Crazy right?”

“Yeah, you think there would be better reasons to go and drink somewhere.” He said flashing me his lopsided grin.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the comment was aimed at me. After all, it was only yesterday he told me that he came to the bar just to meet me. “I know right? But I’m not complaining. I’ve pulled in over two hundred dollars in tips since I started.”

“That’s awesome.”

“Hell yeah, it is. I’ll be able to lock down a new place to live sooner than I thought.” Tessa said putting his drink down. “It’s super busy though; I might not have too much time to talk. I’ll swing by as often as I can.” She added in a little pouty face at the end of her statement.

“Maybe we can get together after your shift is over. I have something I’d really like to talk to you about.”

What did that even mean? She hoped that he wasn’t going to hit on her now. As hot as he was, and as nice as he seemed to be, she hadn’t even been broken up with Justin for a day. She needed a little time to decompress first. It was too soon for her to even think about jumping into another relationship. Before she would be ready, she had to process what happened, and what she wanted for herself going forward. But who knows maybe she was just getting ahead of herself, and he just wanted to chat.
